K-Cups® At A Bargain

The K-cup phenomenon has certainly changed the landscape of the coffee market since 2005. Since Keurig’s September 2012 patent expired, many companies have managed to make spin off K-cup coffee and brewers affordable. What is the current trend of K-cups and is it a fad? Certainly K-cups have had their ups and downs with the environmental community, however by 2019-2020, K-cups are expected to be fully recyclable. In 2013, it was reported that 8.3 billion K-cups buried in the landfills could have wrapped around the equator 10.5 times. An alarming statistic that definitely persuaded Keurig and the coffee community to think about how coffee products and waste affect the world.

The share of households that carry single serve brewers has increased from 1% in 2005, to 27% in 2015 (source: Statista). If hoteliers understand how their guests and consumers are living at home, incorporating the same products and technology into in-room amenities will only increase customer satisfaction. Seattle Times writer Angel Gonzalez reports by 2018, market-research firm Mintel expects consumers to spend nearly as much on coffee pods and k-cups as they do on bulk coffee. Regardless of how non-millennials view k-cups, the convenience is an attraction for younger generations. K-cups are here to stay.
